Visual Style

The idea behind this exercise is to create a loose story with a clear beginning and end which doesn’t have to be predefined in the material.

The main focus is on form and atmosphere.

Questions presented to students are:

What do I want this material to become? This is obviously a deconstructed dance performance with clear segments from beginning to end, however, students are encouraged to find alternative logic behind certain sequences or even base their exercise on a single sequence.

How does the visual style (or more styles) I’ve chosen influence other elements such as sound design and atmosphere? Students are able to choose from four different visual styles present in the material, all differentiated by texture, lighting, color and camera movements. Each style can be paired with sounds which can be lo-fi, analogue, classical, atonal, poppish or whatever students wish to create. Styles can be combined and put into relation to one another.

The goal of the visual style workshop is to encourage building alternate and individual visions from scratch.
